Linapacan — The Clearest Water in the World
Ranked #1 in the world for water clarity. A remote island municipality between El Nido and Coron, reachable only by multi-day expedition. Seatours passes through Linapacan on every 3 Days 2 Nights expedition — you sleep here on Day 2.
In October 2013, American news site Daily News Dig published its list of "35 Clearest Waters in the World to Swim in Before You Die." At the top of the list — above the Maldives, above To Sua Ocean Trench in Samoa, above Hanauma Bay in Hawaii — was Linapacan Island, Palawan, Philippines. More than a decade later, the waters here are still pristine. And almost nobody outside the Philippines knows how to get there.
What Makes Linapacan's Water So Clear?
Water clarity is not just about beauty — it is a direct measure of ecosystem health. Linapacan's extraordinary clarity (consistently 30+ metres of visibility) results from several factors combining in a way that is nearly impossible to replicate:
1. Extreme Remoteness
Linapacan is one of the most remote inhabited archipelagos in the Philippines. The municipality has a population of roughly 14,000 people spread across dozens of islands with almost no road infrastructure. There is no industrial fishing, no agricultural runoff, no resort development on most islands, and very little motorised boat traffic. The ocean around Linapacan is as close to untouched as tropical sea gets in 2026.
2. The Linapacan Strait Flushing Effect
The Linapacan Strait is a deep, open-ocean channel between the Bacuit Archipelago (El Nido) and the Calamian Group (Coron/Busuanga). Strong tidal currents flush the strait consistently, preventing the algal growth and suspended particulate matter that cloud water in sheltered bays. The same currents bring cold, nutrient-rich water from depth, feeding the reef without triggering surface blooms.
3. Intact Coral Ecosystem
The coral reefs of Linapacan have not been subjected to the destructive blast fishing, cyanide fishing, or anchor damage that has degraded reef structures across much of Southeast Asia. Healthy coral filters water and anchors sediment. In Linapacan's lagoons, you can see the coral clearly from the surface at 15–20 feet depth. Our guests consistently describe it as "swimming over a glass floor."
4. White Sand Seabeds
Many of Linapacan's island lagoons have brilliant white carbonate sand seabeds. White sand reflects light upward rather than absorbing it, which creates the impossibly bright blue-turquoise colour visible in photographs — and which looks even more dramatic in person when you can see the seabed from 10 metres above.
How to Visit Linapacan
There is no scheduled ferry to Linapacan. There is no airport. There is no way to do a day trip from El Nido — the crossing is approximately 80 km of open water, a 3–4 hour journey each way in favourable conditions.
The only practical, comfortable, and safe way to visit Linapacan is as part of a multi-day expedition boat travelling the El Nido to Coron (or Coron to El Nido) route. Linapacan sits precisely at the midpoint of this route — it is the natural overnight stop on Day 2 of a 3-day crossing.
Seatours Palawan's 3 Days 2 Nights El Nido to Coron Expedition is the product built around this route. Every departure overnights on a Linapacan island beach. The expedition includes:
- Departure from El Nido on Day 1, island stops in northern Bacuit Bay
- Day 2 — Full Linapacan day: island-hopping stops at Takling Island, Manlingad, Calla Calla, snorkelling over the reef at 30+ metre visibility, overnight at a beachfront kubo campsite on a Linapacan island
- Day 3 — Continuation via Culion to Coron
This is the only Seatours product that visits Linapacan. It is not available as a day-tour add-on. If Linapacan is on your bucket list, the 3D2N expedition is the path.
Linapacan Day — What Day 2 of the Expedition Looks Like
- 07:00 — Wake up at the Linapacan campsite. Fresh breakfast cooked by the crew on the boat.
- 08:30 — First island stop: Takling Island. White sand over crystalline shallows. Snorkel the fringing reef.
- 10:00 — Manlingad Island — exceptional reef snorkel at 15–20ft depth. The coral is visible with naked eyes from the surface. Most guests describe this as the best snorkelling of their entire Philippines trip.
- 11:30 — Calla Calla — pristine lagoon, beach stop, fresh coconuts.
- 13:00 — Island-cooked lunch on the boat: grilled fish caught that morning, prawns, rice, vegetables, fresh juice.
- 14:30 — Afternoon free swim at a private Linapacan island. No other boats. No other groups.
- 17:00 — Return to the Linapacan campsite for sunset. Campfire. Dinner. Stars.
- 20:00 — Sleep in a beachfront kubo hut with the sound of the strait.
Day 2 itinerary is subject to sea conditions. The captain selects the specific island stops based on weather and tides.

Is Linapacan really the clearest water in the world?
Linapacan was ranked #1 by Daily News Dig in October 2013 in a global list of the 35 clearest waters in the world. It ranked above the Maldives, To Sua Ocean Trench (Samoa), Hanauma Bay (Hawaii), and Aitutaki (Cook Islands). The ranking reflects the combination of extreme remoteness, intact coral ecosystem, strong tidal flushing through the Linapacan Strait, and white-sand seabeds that create exceptional visibility — consistently 30+ metres.
How do you get to Linapacan?
There is no scheduled ferry or direct transport to Linapacan from El Nido or Coron. The only practical way to visit is via a multi-day expedition boat. Seatours Palawan's 3 Days 2 Nights El Nido to Coron Expedition (₱18,900/person) passes through Linapacan on Day 2, with an overnight beach campsite. This is the only Seatours product that includes Linapacan.
Can I visit Linapacan on a day trip from El Nido?
No. The distance from El Nido to Linapacan is approximately 80 km across the open Linapacan Strait. The crossing takes 3–4 hours each way in good conditions. A day trip would mean 6–8 hours of open-water travel with almost no time at the destination — this is neither practical nor safe. The overnight expedition is the correct format for visiting Linapacan.
What specific islands does the Seatours expedition visit in Linapacan?
The expedition typically visits Takling Island, Manlingad Island, and Calla Calla — three islands specifically noted for exceptional water clarity and snorkelling. The overnight campsite is on a private Linapacan island beach. The captain selects the exact route based on sea conditions. All three of these islands are in the northern Linapacan group between the Linapacan Strait and the main island.
What is the water visibility like at Linapacan?
Consistently 30+ metres. Guests report being able to see the seabed clearly at 10–15 metres while floating on the surface. The coral at Manlingad and Takling is visible from snorkel depth without any dive equipment. Photographs taken from the boat deck show individual fish swimming 5–6 metres below the hull. It is the kind of visibility that makes you question whether you are looking at real water or a photograph.
